An EF3 tornado struck Andover, Kan., Friday evening April 29. An estimated 1,000 structures were damaged.
The Southern Baptist churches in Andover immediately sprang into action. Andover Baptist Church, pastored by James W. Gillespie, is headquarters for Southern Baptist relief efforts. Faith Baptist Church, pastored by Jerry Smith, is also ministering to the great needs in the community.
Many local volunteers responded so outside teams were not needed.
Glenn Davis, associational missions strategist for Heart of Kansas Association, praised the local Southern Baptist relief effort:
“Southern Baptist churches and their volunteers did a wonderful job of responding to this crisis.
“I saw hard workers loving their neighbors in the Name of Jesus.
“I saw great cooperation and the fruit of the Spirit of God in the lives of volunteers.
“And I heard from many more who were willing to help. There were many others who would have stepped up if the need were greater.”
