The memorial service for retired KNCSB staff member Ray Gilliland will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, at East 7th Street Baptist Church (Graffiti Church) in New York City.
Gilliland died Sunday, March 11, in Austin, Texas, at age 95.
He was born in Coffeyville, Kan., and was a long-time resident of Wichita.
“My father-in-law never lost his love for the church, his commitment to ministry and his home state of Kansas,” his son-in-law Craig Smith said.
Ray worked for the Kansas Convention of Southern Baptists (now Kansas-Nebraska Convention) in Wichita from 1952-1969 and for the Home Mission Board (now North American Mission Board) in New York City from 1970-1987.
During his time in New York City he helped found Graffiti Church, which began its ministry in the Lower East Side in the early 1970s through a small storefront.
Today Graffiti Church has five sites in the area and two affiliates in other cities. It has assisted in starting more than 40 new churches.
Memorials may be sent to East 7th Street Baptist Church, 205 E. 7th St., New York, NY 10009.
